About the Author

Davina Kotulski, Ph.D.


Davina Kotulski, Ph.D. Davina Kotulski, Ph.D., is a Clinical Psychologist, working in the Federal Corrections system, as well as the Executive Director of Marriage Equality, USA. In her role as Psychologist at the Federal Corrections Facility in Dublin, CA, she not only provides clinical assessment and treatment for inmates, but she also directs the Internship training program at that facility. Dr. Kotulski provides counseling on substance abuse, sexual abuse and domestic violence in both English and Spanish. She was previously the mental health consultant for the Hostage Negotiation Team.

In her role as the Executive Director of Marriage Equality, USA, Dr. Kotulski provides public speaking, assists with fundraising activities, pens the monthly newsletter, supervises volunteer leaders throughout the country, and organizes rallies, retreats, community outreach, monthly meetings, and media events in support of marriage equality.

Dr. Kotulski has served on the Faculty of a number of different universities, teaching both basic and advanced courses in Psychotherapy. Kotulski spent eight years teaching marriage and family counseling to psychology and divinity students, yet ironically, Kotulski and her wife of nine years are excluded from the civil institution of marriage.

She is the author of Why You Should Give a Damn about Gay Marriage, a book describing why marriage equality is a must for LGBT Americans.  She has also published an anthology entitled "I Do/ I Don't: Queers on Marriage."

She has received multiple awards for marriage equality advocacy including the “Defenders of Love” Award in 2003, the “Saints Alive” Award from the San Francisco Metropolitan Community Church, the Michael Switzer Award in 2006 and was “sainted” by the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence in 2004.
