GENERAL COURSE DESCRIPTION
Sexuality is one of the most fundamental parts of being human and is usually present in therapy, whether explicitly or implicitly. Its effects on identity and individual or relational issues are almost always intertwined with therapy, and well-qualified therapists need to have a working knowledge of all its aspects. The well-qualified therapist must be versed in sexual psychoeducation, how sexuality affects individual and couples relational issues, and how to directly address sexual issues when they are explicitly part of therapy. Many therapists are reluctant to discuss sexual issues with clients. This course, with this frank discussion of sexual issues and its information on sex therapy, will help therapists become more comfortable and conversant with sexuality in its many and diverse forms.
Expert Contributors
This advanced course in human sexuality covers required CE topics in many states and goes well beyond to include more in-depth discussion of sexuality issues. Section One explores couples' sexual issues and principles of couples therapy. It includes an audio interview with renowned sex therapist Dr. Barry McCarthy and articles by best selling author and therapist Esther Perel, SW, author of Mating in Captivity. Section Two addresses societal issues about sexuality, which negatively impact healthy sexuality, and explores whether pornography is always unhealthy or may serve positive purposes. It includes a audio from sex therapist and critical thinker Dr. Marty Klein on the "War on Sex," along with articles by Dr. Klein, therapist Wendy Maltz, LCSW, author of The Porn Trap, and psychologist Dr. Kimberly Young, world renowned expert on Internet addictions and online behaviors. Therapists will learn about the exponential rise in the use of Internet pornography, how it affects couples and society, how and when to treat it, and differing ways to view porn. Section Three considers sexuality issues concerning women, gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people, the middle-aged and elderly, and includes a discussion of sex and HIV. You will learn the latest guidelines from the American Psychological Association (APA) and American Counseling Association (ACA) that describe required clinical competencies for therapists working with LGBT populations, and view first person testimony about life as a gay middle and high school student.
Next there is a review of the inequalities in the health care system for people with HIV, and HIV-positive psychologist, Dr. Tom Smith, describes in an audio interview the current state of HIV prevention and living with HIV. This is followed by a unique audio interview with George Zilbergeld, brother of the famed Dr. Bernie Zilbergeld, authors of Better Than Ever, which explains why and how sex in middle and old age isn't just a compromise but an erotic joy. Section Four contains up to date information on contraception from the World Health Organization, including sections on contraception methods for HIV-positive people. Section Five examines the most recent information on the physiological aspects of sexuality, including information on sexually transmitted diseases; their incidence, symptoms and treatments. Finally, Section Six contains additional resources for both therapists and clients.
