GENERAL COURSE DESCRIPTION
Mental Health Apps is an exploding area of psychotherapy. Expected to be a $600 million industry in 2012, apps are becoming simpler to make and cheaper to acquire. Many are free, cost 99 cents or just a few dollars. They can be used by therapists for personal development or clinical work, by clients to support their therapeutic work, or by laypeople not in therapy. Through sheer low price and ease of accessibility, mental health apps make mental health services available to millions of people who may otherwise be prohibited by cost, geographic location, preference for treatment modality, or time. Soldiers stationed overseas, people living in rural areas, or people who suffer from panic attacks are just some examples of those who can benefit from this touch-of-a-button option.
Apps can be used by therapists to verify CPT codes, DSM diagnoses, drug doses and interactions, to record a relaxation audio for clients, show clients how their brain may be functioning, and much more. Clients can use mental health apps to record and deal with mood swings, depression, etc. They can also benefit from apps that offer CBT type support, relaxation, sleep aids, coping and preventing panic attacks, to effectively deal with PTSD responses, learn about side effects of drugs and drug interactions, and much, much more.
This course includes an apps list with examples in the areas of dream analysis, assessments, psychology study guides, and depression, to name a few.
This introductory level course is the first of its kind. The first section includes a brief introduction to mental health apps, with examples showing the wide range of options for apps. The second section includes two video interviews with mental health experts Dr. Robert Woliver and Dr. Michael Britt, both of whom have created highly successful apps. The third section includes a case study with information on laypeople's experience using mental health apps. The final section includes a detailed resource list with app examples for a variety of issues, and articles for further reading.
