GENERAL COURSE DESCRIPTION
This introductory course details the multiple topics that compose the field of forensic psychology, forensic psychiatry or criminal psychology and is primarily based on articles by Dr. T. O'Connor. Forensic Psychology is generally defined as the application of the science and profession of psychology to issues relating to law and the legal system. "Forensic" refers to the application of scientific principles and practices to the adversary process where especially knowledgeable scientists play a role. This course is aimed to introduce participants to the numerous issues that are involved in the field of forensic psychology. While the course is aimed at breadth rather than depth, it does provide many resources and references on each topic, enabling participants to inquire further into areas of interest.
The course covers the following sub-areas within forensic psychology: The relationships among Mental Health, Social Science and Law, Police Psychology, Criminology, Investigative Psychology, Crime Psychology, Theories of Crime, Lie Detection, Eyewitness Errors, Hypnosis, Psychotherapy, False Confession, Psychopathy, Antisocial Personality Disorder, Expert Testimony, Daubert, Psychology of Violence and Hate, School and Violence, Sexual Predation & Pedophilia, Custody, Violence and Abuse, Repressed and Recovered Memories, Assessment of Competency and Sanity, and Correctional Psychology.
