GENERAL COURSE DESCRIPTION

Obesity in Children

The obesity levels of children are skyrocketing, and we are now witnessing not only an all time high, but also record weights being recorded by those under the age of eighteen. This epidemic, spurred on by an increasing infiltration of child marketers, has created a new diet culture in children. As more children go on diets, try weight loss products, and even turn to cosmetic surgery, the dependence on looking thin has grown even stronger. Yet faced with powerful market forces now targeting children as the most fortuitous segment of the consumer population, more children than ever are losing ground. The parents of these children, often struggling with their own weight issues, are almost entirely at a loss to help them, as well.

This introductory course reports the current research on three key relational factors that influence childhood obesity: acceptance, consistent rules and expectations, and modeling. The clinician will also be provided with methods to address these issues therapeutically. In addition, the core components of motivation (mastery, autonomy, and purpose) will be discussed in detail and therapeutic techniques will be outlined so that the clinician can facilitate the development of these components. Current research on nutrition and exercise is presented, and tools are offered for the development of plans to modify both. The last section of the course will provide additional resources for clinicians and parents to further understand and address childhood obesity.
