SEEKING CONSULTING POSITION
I am seeking a consulting position in which I can use my experience, capacities and psychological knowledge to decrease human suffering in Africa or other continents, with a focus on health, bio-ethics, disease prevention, staff development, conflict resolution and to increase compliance with and effectiveness of treatment. I am looking for a part-time consulting position that requires traveling to third world countries, preferably Africa, for about 2-3 weeks every 2-3 months.

SUMMARY OF RELEVANT EXPERIENCE:

  • As a seasoned social and clinical psychologist (I received my doctorate in psychology back in 1984), I have acquired a great deal of experience and understanding of human behavior and social change, psychology of war and conflict, medical ethics, organizational development, mediation and conflict resolution.
  • As a limnologist and fish-culture expert, in my first career, I lived and worked in East Africa in the 1970's, where I researched family-sized fishponds. I have visited East and South Africa since then and am familiar with the cultures and the people.
  • As a lieutenant and paratrooper, I fought in battle. I am an experienced outdoorsman and I have taken many backpacking trips to remote areas in Africa, the U.S.A. and Israel. Most recently, this summer, I climbed to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro.

I AM SEEKING A PART-TIME CONSULTING POSITION IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS:

  • Health Promotion, Disease Prevention and Compliance with Treatment: I am very interested in the psychological approaches to changing sexual and other behavior, as well as using psychological techniques for enhancing health and effective disease prevention and increasing compliance with treatment.
  • Bio-Ethics: I have written and presented extensively on issues of ethics, law and ethical decision-making. More recently I have focused on the ethics of treatment of people with HIV/AIDS, which covers issues such as confidentiality, criminal transmission, reporting, etc.
  • Treatment of PTSD, Trauma, Vicarious Traumatization, and Burnout: I am very experienced in the treatment of trauma, which can be applied to refugees, victims of rape and domestic violence and to relief staff suffering from vicarious traumatization & burnout.
  • Needs assessment: I can evaluate and assess the specific needs of certain people, cultures and regions in regard to problems, such as AIDS, Malaria, TB, Domestic Violence, etc.
  • Program evaluation: I can act as an outside expert for programs and organizations to objectively, evaluate the effectiveness of their investments and efforts.
  • Staff and Team Development, and Conflict Resolution: I can help with team building, clarification of goals, organizational development, mediation and conflict resolution.

BACKGROUND

  • Oceanography/Limnology:In my first career, I conducted research in limnology and oceanography. As a limnologist, I worked in East Africa researching fresh-water, family-sized fishponds, and as an oceanographer, my research at the Red Sea in Israel was with raising fish in flowing cages in the ocean.
  • Expertise in Psychology: My teaching, publications and expert consulting in social and clinical psychology have covered the following areas:
    • Psychology of war and violence, including violence on TV, video games and the Web.
