SEEKING CONSULTING POSITION I am seeking a consulting position in which I can use my experience, capacities and psychological knowledge to decrease human suffering in Africa or other continents, with a focus on health, bio-ethics, disease prevention, staff development, conflict resolution and to increase compliance with and effectiveness of treatment. I am looking for a part-time consulting position that requires traveling to third world countries, preferably Africa, for about 2-3 weeks every 2-3 months.
SUMMARY OF RELEVANT EXPERIENCE:
As a seasoned social and clinical psychologist (I received my doctorate in psychology back in 1984), I have acquired a great deal of experience and understanding of human behavior and social change, psychology of war and conflict, medical ethics, organizational development, mediation and conflict resolution.
As a limnologist and fish-culture expert, in my first career, I lived and worked in East Africa in the 1970's, where I researched family-sized fishponds. I have visited East and South Africa since then and am familiar with the cultures and the people.
As a lieutenant and paratrooper, I fought in battle. I am an experienced outdoorsman and I have taken many backpacking trips to remote areas in Africa, the U.S.A. and Israel. Most recently, this summer, I climbed to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro.
I AM SEEKING A PART-TIME CONSULTING POSITION IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS:
Health Promotion, Disease Prevention and Compliance with Treatment: I am very interested in the psychological approaches to changing sexual and other behavior, as well as using psychological techniques for enhancing health and effective disease prevention and increasing compliance with treatment.
Bio-Ethics: I have written and presented extensively on issues of ethics, law and ethical decision-making. More recently I have focused on the ethics of treatment of people with HIV/AIDS, which covers issues such as confidentiality, criminal transmission, reporting, etc.
Treatment of PTSD, Trauma, Vicarious Traumatization, and Burnout: I am very experienced in the treatment of trauma, which can be applied to refugees, victims of rape and domestic violence and to relief staff suffering from vicarious traumatization & burnout.
Needs assessment: I can evaluate and assess the specific needs of certain people, cultures and regions in regard to problems, such as AIDS, Malaria, TB, Domestic Violence, etc.
Program evaluation: I can act as an outside expert for programs and organizations to objectively, evaluate the effectiveness of their investments and efforts.
Staff and Team Development, and Conflict Resolution: I can help with team building, clarification of goals, organizational development, mediation and conflict resolution.
BACKGROUND
Oceanography/Limnology:In my first career, I conducted research in limnology and oceanography. As a limnologist, I worked in East Africa researching fresh-water, family-sized fishponds, and as an oceanographer, my research at the Red Sea in Israel was with raising fish in flowing cages in the ocean.
Expertise in Psychology: My teaching, publications and expert consulting in social and clinical psychology have covered the following areas:
Psychology of war and violence, including violence on TV, video games and the Web.
Gender studies, including psychology of men and women and domestic violence.
Effective psychotherapy and counseling and therapists' burnout.
