Dr. Chelsea Mackey has specialized in working with individuals going through extreme states, psychosis, voice hearing, and spiritual emergencies for the past 15 years. She has presented internationally and throughout the US on ways to deepen one’s work with altered states and on the effectiveness of therapy for such. She engages in individual and family therapy, as well as process and skills groups for people who have experienced psychosis. She has trained as a Hearing Voices Network Facilitator and for the past 2 years has volunteered to run a free weekly voice hearing group in the local community. She is a member of the International Society for Psychological and Social Approaches to Psychosis (ISPS) and works successfully with individuals in all stages of interest in medication as well as completely without.
Dr. Mackey also works in a consultation role with therapists seeking to enhance their skills in this area and is a group supervisor for pre-doctoral interns at her office in Sacramento, CA. Dr. Mackey incorporates aspects of psychodynamics psychotherapy, Positive Psychology, Compassion Focused Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment therapy, Mindfulness Based treatment, spiritually focused treatment, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Dr. Mackey enjoys helping to integrate previous experiences of extreme states into a person’s evolving identity and has consistently found the creation of a safe and caring space in therapy to be healing for all individuals present. Dr. Mackey views the personal growth and decreases of intensity that her clients experience over time as a reminder to the field of psychiatry that a person’s diagnosis in one moment does not have to be the final description of who they are and how they live.
