Mental health professionals in the areas of clinical, counseling, and health psychology settings are facing increasing demands. Waitlists are growing longer, caseloads are expanding, and documentation tasks are piling up. At the same time, clients’ needs are becoming more complex. Clinicians must handle a wide range of challenges, often with limited time and resources, whether helping someone through a life transition or diagnosing overlapping psychological and physical conditions.
This course examines how artificial intelligence (AI) is being used in clinical, counseling, and health psychology settings. AI can assist mental health professionals as they work to engage clients from diverse backgrounds, keep momentum between sessions, reduce paperwork, and make care decisions that are both timely and personalized. Health psychologists can leverage AI responsibly across cognitive and neuropsychological assessment, behavior change support, early mental health screening, remote monitoring, and reduction of disparities in care access. The course concludes with exciting new trends in AI – digital assistants, workflow assistants, and client and protocol agents – that may impact clinical, counseling, and health psychology settings in the future.
Content consists of three modules from the book Artificial Intelligence for Mental Health Professionals by Brenda Hart, Ph.D., Antonio Diego Vasquez, A. Vincent Vasquez, MS, MBA. It has been created with the assistance of AI and is presented with the permission of the authors. Coursework consists of three modules presented in audio and written formats.
