Myths and Faulty Beliefs Regarding Ethics and the Standard of Care in Psychotherapy & Counseling

Many decisions regarding clinical work are derived from an understanding of standards of care that may be based on beliefs that are not fully developed or based on unvalidated assumptions. While a crucial consideration, too often risk management concerns override other, equally, if not more important, aspects of clinical care.

This intermediate level course is comprised of 2 videos with audio and text versions of Dr. Ofer Zur discussing how certain clinical myths and beliefs creep into decision making, at times at the expense of what might be best for the client. Dr. Zur begins with an overview of one of the foundations of therapist/evaluator interactions, the standard of care, and by reviewing certain misconceptions he provides insights into how clinicians can provide ethically grounded, compassionate care that best serves their clients.

In addition to Dr. Zur’s discussion of ethical considerations, he presents on topics of clinical concerns such as assumptions regarding infidelity, telemental health, and other contemporary topics.
