Graduate schools and professional training, which often base their ethics and practice teaching on the urban, analytic or risk management principles, rarely prepare therapists to deal with this important aspect of rural mental health. Many of the dominant urban-analytic-risk-management-based practices are often not applicable in rural practices.

This beginning/intermediate level course is comprised of one article and one audio (text transcript provided). The course provides a glimpse into the unique reality of mental health practice in rural areas, identifies specific complexities, challenges and needs that emerge around therapeutic boundaries, and offers ways to approach and navigate them ethically and effectively. Additional resources and references are provided for further study, but they are not part of the course.
