DESCRIPTION: Humans are masters at lying to ourselves. At the most basic level, self-deception is fooling ourselves into believing something that is false –or—refusing to believe something that is true. And it’s one of our biggest obstacles to growing and evolving because it’s very hard to change something we can’t admit.
This beginner- to intermediate-level webinar provides mental health professionals with an overview of the psychology behind self-deception in three main sections. First, Dr. Warren will review how people lie to themselves from the perspective of some of the major theoretical orientations in psychology, including psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, existential, and multicultural perspectives. Second, we will explore why people lie to themselves and some of the primary costs of self-deception to personal growth, interpersonal relationships, and society at large. Finally, we will explore how to work with self-deceptive beliefs in a therapeutic context with a focus on cognitive interventions to assess and challenge them.

Dr. Cortney S. Warren is a Board-Certified Clinical Psychologist and Adjunct Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health at the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Macalester College in 2000 and her PhD in clinical psychology from Texas A&M University in 2006 after completing her clinical internship at McLean Hospital/Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Warren is an expert on addictions, self-deception, eating pathology, and the practice of psychotherapy from a cross-cultural perspective. With almost 50 peer-reviewed journal articles, 7 book chapters, two books, and 75 professional presentations, Dr. Warren has won some of the most prestigious awards in her field. In addition to publishing in academic circles, Dr. Warren works as a research consultant, keynote speaker, and writes a blog for Psychology Today. In her TEDx talk Honest Liars and its associated book Lies We Tell Ourselves: The Psychology of Self-Deception, Dr. Warren argues that self-deception is our biggest obstacle to personal growth. Her latest work is a self-help book that explores romantic love and breakups through an addictive lens called, Letting Go of Your Ex: CBT Skills to Heal the Pain of a Breakup and Overcome Love Addiction (2023). Course completion requirements: After the webinar if you attended the entire webinar you will have access to the course in your My Courses. If you did not attend the entire webinar you will have access to the course withing 3-5 days when the video is uploaded to the course. You will be notified by email when the recording is ready.
In order to receive Live CE credit hours, you must attend the entire webinar and then complete the post webinar test and evaluation within 30 days of the end of the webinar.
If you pay and either miss part of the webinar or are unable to attend: Don’t worry. You can still obtain CE credits (though not Live) by viewing the recording and taking the post-test and evaluation. You will receive an email notification when the recording is ready for viewing, no later than 5 days after the webinar is over. You have 3 years to complete a home-study course. Our Live Webinars are live and include ample opportunity to interact with the presenters. They qualify as in-person continuing education in most states. Each state has its own requirements for licensure, including continuing education requirements, to maintain licensure. Questions about CE requirements for state licensure should be directed to your state board.

CE credits for psychologists outside of New York state will be provided by Sacramento Center for Psychotherapy. Sacramento Center for Psychotherapy is approved by the American Psychological Association (APA) to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Sacramento Center for Psychotherapy maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
CE credits for all other professions including New York licensed psychologists, will be provided by Zur Institute.
