General Course Description

TeleMental HealthTelehealth is here to stay, and growing fast. In addition to the legal and ethical issues, psychotherapists, supervisors, teachers and trainers should also know how to acquire a feel for using such components as websites, videoconferencing and smartphones with their clients.

This introductory course will teach some of the effective components of teletherapy as well as techniques for some specific disorders. The first article provides an overview of what psychotherapists, trainers, supervisors and professors should know about practicing teletherapy. The next section of 3 articles examines the applicability of teletherapy for emotional and experiential therapy, marriage and family therapy, and psychoanalysis.The final section of 3 articles presents some concrete ways to use teletherapy for PTSD, alcohol abuse, and clients with financial problems. Additional resources and references are provided for further study, but they are not part of the course.
 

Educational Objectives

    This course will teach the participant to:
  • Discuss specific skills to use with telepsychology.
  • Discuss the barriers of using telepsychology with psychoanalysis.
  • Apply telepsychology principles to experiential, emotional and creative psychotherapy.
  • Describe a method of telepsychology for clients with financial-related disorders.
  • Describe using smartphone technology with alcoholic clients.
  • Discuss using telepsychology to treat PTSD.
