DESCRIPTION: Shame and self-blame are among the most pervasive and clinically challenging forces in trauma work — yet they are often misread, minimized, or missed entirely. Clients who withdraw from care, relentlessly criticize themselves, present with persistent self-doubt, or seem stuck despite solid therapeutic progress may be living inside a shame response that neither they nor their clinicians have fully named. When shame goes unrecognized, treatment stalls and clients suffer unnecessarily.
This webinar offers clinicians a practical and theoretically grounded framework for understanding and working with shame and self-blame across trauma presentations. Drawing on key frameworks including Tangney&#8217;s shame-guilt distinction, Nathanson&#8217;s Compass of Shame, Brown&#8217;s Shame Resilience Theory, Etherson&#8217;s Shame Containment Theory, and Gilbert&#8217;s compassion-focused approach, participants will learn to recognize shame-based clinical presentations, understand their developmental and relational origins, and apply evidence-informed interventions in the therapy room. The course includes case illustrations and is applicable to psychologists, therapists, social workers, and counselors across disciplines who work with trauma-affected clients regardless of diagnosis or population.

AI chatbots, technically referred to as large language models, have been adopted faster than any technology in history, for reasons not hard to understand: they do not just provide information, they offer comfort. That is a powerful combination for people who are increasingly lonely, stressed, and mistrustful of others. Whether or not we consider ourselves technically inclined, AI is already part of our clients’ emotional lives.
This webinar is the first in a series of three that offers participants an orientation to where things stand: the social forces driving AI adoption, the specific technologies clients are using, and the multiple roles these technologies can play, including friend, lover, and therapist.
This training is designed for clinicians at every level of technical comfort, including those who have never interacted with a chatbot. Research regarding the potential therapeutic effectiveness of chatbots and how they compete with traditional therapy, will be reviewed.  We will look at what AI tools can genuinely offer clients, as well as the risks that deserve our clinical attention. We’ll give particular care to vulnerable populations, including adolescents and clients with attachment challenges. Participants will leave with a clearer map of this new terrain and a solid foundation for webinars two and three.

This webinar is the practical core of the series: how to screen for AI use at intake in a way that opens the conversation rather than closing it, how to assess the function AI is serving in a client’s life, and how to have honest conversations about benefits and risks without pathologizing a tool the client may genuinely value. We will examine concrete options for becoming more competitive, including integrating VR protocols, deepening our human presence in the therapy room, offering a hybrid therapy + AI model of care, reconsidering fees and availability, and reskilling toward the areas where AI consistently falls short: severe mental illness, couples therapy, trauma, family systems, and forensics.
The webinar closes with a discussion of the personal reactions most of us are having to our rapidly changing professional landscape and world. Together, we will consider countertransference with AI-involved clients, the challenge of sitting with an uncertain professional future, AI’s reach into our personal and family lives, and self-care as a clinical imperative rather than a luxury. We will close by exploring the meaning and opportunity this moment holds for therapists willing to meet it.
