While it is relatively easy to read about how to supervise, it is far more challenging to provide supervision that facilitates learning and encourages trainees to excel in their areas of expertise. Furthermore, while most courses on supervision focus on the experience of the supervisor, much of the focus in this course is on enhancing the supervisee’s experience. For those who currently supervise, as well as those new to supervision, this course presents information that will enhance your clinical thinking and ethical decision-making in a way that benefits all parties.

This intermediate level course is comprised of two sections. The first reviews key components of competent supervision and ethical decision making and includes two interviews, both with transcripts. The first is an interview with Carol Falendar, PhD, who has been an important advocate for development of standards in supervision training. The second interview is with Dr. David Wechsler discussing supervision from both the supervisor and supervisee perspectives.

The second section contains two published articles highlighting components of “harmful” supervision written by supervisees. Included is an additional article containing in-depth recommendations for assuring that the supervision process avoids potential harm while addressing often unspoken needs of supervisees.
