This is a beginning to intermediate level course introducing and updating psychotherapists, counselors, and other mental health providers, on the complexities and applications of HIPAA regulations. All content is presented in text format.

The course will help psychotherapists achieve compliance with HIPAA and will point out how to deal with issues that arise when state laws and HIPAA regulations overlap. The course includes extensive updates on the Security Rule, Electronic Health Records (EHR), and what types of communications need to adhere to HIPAA regulations. Coverage of numerous changes and interpretations of HIPAA according to the ever-evolving internet and cloud technology are included along with mention of proposed future changes.

The course explains HIPAA-related terms, such as Covered Entity, Privacy Rule, Security Rule, Psychotherapy Notes, Consent, Authorization, Risk Assessment, Risk Management, Breach Assessment, Breach Notification Rule, and many other terms and rulings. Checklists and resources are provided to guide therapists through what is needed to maintain HIPAA compliance, conduct appropriate trainings, and engage in a risk analysis.
