Informed Consent is one of the most basic ways by which therapists protect their clients’ rights to be informed and to make decisions based on relevant information. This is the consent by a client to a proposed psychotherapeutic procedure or for participation in a research project or clinical study. It not only protects the client but also protects the clinician. In order for the consent to be informed the client must first achieve a clear understanding of the relevant facts, risks and benefits involved.
This intermediate course consists of one audio (text transcript provided) which reviews the nuts and bolts of Informed Consent and an article that reviews the codes of ethics on the topic. It also provides themost basic (ready-to-use and easily personalized) form that most therapists should have in their practice, Office Policies & Informed Consent for Psychotherapy and Counseling, as well as samples of other informed consent forms.
Additional resources and references are provided for further study, but they are not part of the course.
