In spite of the trend toward normalization of mental health and therapy, and with social media outlets such as TikTok and Instagram offering mental health tips, addressing domestic and intimate partner violence (IPV) remains difficult. This holds true even among clinicians who often feel stuck when their clients continue to struggle with the aftermath of abuse weeks, months, and even years after the relationship(s) have ended.

This intermediate level course provides clinicians strategies they can use in their practices, along with tools they can share with clients to help them move towards a healthier future in the aftermath of their experiences. Content is pulled from both current literature and the author’s extensive professional experience helping victims of all genders, sexualities, races, and abilities to navigate their journey in and out of toxic relationships and discusses treatment both during and in the aftermath of abuse.

Information for assisting clients through each stage of the process is provided. The first section of this course provides an overview of the many elements that make up intimate partner violence including statistics, what to look for, an overview of the history of domestic and intimate partner violence laws in the United States, and common effects of IPV. The next section provides information on perpetuators of abuse and how this information can be of use clinically.
