Introduction to Workplace Coaching – From Therapist to Coach: Broaden Your Skill Set/Create Options – 4 Sessions

Zur Institute, in collaboration with Dana Ackley, Ph.D., president of EQ Leader, Inc, is pleased to provide the following series:

Introduction to Workplace Coaching – From Therapist to Coach: Broaden Your Skill Set/Create Options

Dana is the recipient of the 2021 LWF leadership award, given by APA’s Society of Consulting Psychologists in recognition of his lifetime efforts assisting practitioners making the transition into the field of coaching and consulting.

Many therapists become coaches in the workplace, either full time or in addition to their clinical work. What makes it appealing?

  • It’s a new and rewarding way to help people
  • It multiplies the good you do: as a coach, you help your clients, and, by extension, everyone with whom your clients work
  • With some adaptations, it allows you to use skills you already have
  • It allows for a dramatic increase in income
  • It provides an opportunity to structure helping relationships on your terms
  • It frees one from constraints of contemporary practice
  • It offers relief from the administrative hassles of HIPAA and insurance

Our Spring Series, Introduction to Workplace Coaching, is an easy way to get started. We have created a sequence of virtual sessions designed to provide an in-depth understanding of what is required to set up a successful coaching practice, either full time or as an addition to your current clinical practice. We will show you just what steps you will need to take to get on your way.

These sessions will be interactive with ample time to have your questions answered.

This series is a follow-up to an introductory session: Is Coaching for You. If you were unable to attend that session, you can learn more about it and purchase the recording here

Can’t attend every virtual session live? Don’t worry. A recording of each course will be provided for all who register.

All sessions will be offered 2:30 – 4:30 Pacific Time/5:30 – 7:30 Eastern Time.

If you’re intrigued by the idea of adding coaching to your practice, whether to revitalize your practice by doing something new, to increase your income, or to take a break from the constraints of managed care, we’d love to have you join us!

PLEASE NOTE: Virtually all organizations that set guidelines for CE courses explicitly state trainings related to personal growth or business applications do not qualify for CE credit. Hence no CE certificates will be provided.

Session One (May 5th): The Nature of Successful Coaching Relationships

This training offers a deep dive into the similarities and differences between therapy relationships and coaching relationships. Learn more about how what you already know will help you be a successful coach.

Then learn about necessary adaptations of those skills because of the difference in context. For example, we will deal with issues of confidentiality, boundaries, session content, the coaching relationship, selected coaching tools, and how to structure coaching engagements.

Each of these topics will be covered thoroughly. Through adapting skills to this different context the “I don’t fit” concern can be avoided.

Session Two (May 19th): Principles of a Comprehensive Coaching Program

As with therapy, the goal of coaching is to create sustainable change. That’s what coaches get paid for. Fortunately, psychological science has established principles every coaching program needs in order to create meaningful change. Dr. Ackley will provide the ten principles needed in order to build an approach that not only works, but will get you hired for additional engagements.

Building upon those ten principles, he will walk you through the four components of a successful workplace-based program – introductory workshop, client assessment, development planning, and coaching. Each step is designed to create a fully informed, trusting, and impactful coaching relationship.

Session Three (June 2nd):  How to Build a Successful Coaching Practice

Having learned something about the nature of the coaching relationship, you may find yourself asking: “OK. Now I know that I can be a good coach. How do I build a coaching business?”

In this workshop, Dr. Ackley will take you through the Six Steps of Marketing. By the end, you will have the foundation for a custom-made plan for building your coaching practice. The Six Steps of Marketing is a time-tested process developed in his book Breaking Free of Managed Care (Guilford, 1997) and taught to thousands of therapists in his workshops. This process has also been successfully implemented by coaches seeking to build their businesses.

But there’s more. Your marketing efforts will create opportunities. Most workplace coaches contract with organizations, not with individuals. Therefore you need to know how to have face to face meetings that result in you getting contracts. It is a learnable skill. This workshop will get you started.

Session Four (June 16th): The Business Skills of Workplace Coaching

Once you have an agreement, you won’t want to look like an amateur. Most therapists have had little training and experience in building a business. You will need to develop certain business skills essential for a thriving coaching practice.

In this training, you will learn business-of-coaching skills including:

  • How to write a proposal that works
  • How to negotiate win-win contracts
  • How to invoice for your work without alienating clients
  • How to keep track of consulting time
  • Multiple modes for compensation
  • Pros and cons of using legal contracts
