DSM-5 Classification of Anxiety Disorders

DSM-5 has made several changes in the classification of anxiety disorders. Some common previously included Anxiety Disorders have been moved out of this classification into other areas, and several new Anxiety Disorders have been added.

The DSM-5 list of anxiety disorders are:

• Separation anxiety disorder
• Selective mutism
• Phobias:
• Animal
• Natural environment
• Blood/injection/injury
• Fear of blood
• Fear of injections/transfusions
• Fear of other medical care
• Fear of injury
• Situational
• Other
• Social anxiety disorder
• Panic disorder
• Agoraphobia
• Generalized anxiety disorder
• Substance/medication-induced anxiety disorder
• Anxiety disorder due to another medical condition
• Other specified anxiety disorder
• Unspecified anxiety disorder

Several previously classified anxiety disorders have been moved to other sections of DSM-5. Obsessive-Compulsive disorder now has its own section, Obsessive Compulsive and Related Disorders, which includes Body dysmorphic disorder, Hoarding disorder, Trichotillomania (Hair-pulling) disorder, Excoriation (Skin-picking) disorder, and Substance or medication-induced obsessive-compulsive and related disorders.

Post-Traumatic Stress disorder and Acute Stress Disorder have also been moved from the Anxiety Disorder section into a separate Trauma and Stressor-Related Disorder section. This new section also includes Adjustment disorders.
