Certified Clinical Supervision Certification (CCS):
- Must be certified on a AODA reciprocal level (CADP).
- Verification of 5 years (10,000 hours) of counseling experience as an AODA counselor.
- Verification of 2 years (4,000 hours) of clinical supervisory experience in the AODA field. These 2 years may be included in the 5 years of counseling experience and must include the provision of 200 contact hours of face-to-face clinical supervision.
- Verification of 30 hours of didactic training in clinical supervision. This must include training in each of the following areas: (1)Assessment (2)Diagnostic Impression (3)Counselor Development (4)Management/Administration (5)Training of Counselors (6)Program Development and (7)Professional Conduct.
- Submission of 3 references from individuals familiar with the applicants work as clinical supervisor, one of whom must have supervised the candidates clinical supervision.
- Masters Degree in a social service or related field from an accredited college.
- Passing of a written exam approved by ICRC.
- Certification will be designated as a Certified Clinical Supervision (CCS) and will replace the CADP for persons meeting the CCS certification requirements.
- There will be a $100 fee for the initial certification for persons currently certified as CADP (in good standing). All other applicants will have to pay the CADP certification fee and complete the CADP certification process.

Information per the Alaska Commission for Behavioral Health Certification

Chemical Dependency Clinical Supervisor (CDCS)
Experience:
Five (5) years of full-time work experience in chemical dependency counseling supervised by either a certified Counselor II (CDC II) or certified Clinical Supervisor (CDCS) OR
A bachelor’s degree or higher in a Human Services area: chemical dependency, social work, rehabilitation, clinical/counseling psychology, social services may substitute for one year of required work experience.
YOU MAY NOT USE COURSES OBTAINED UNDER YOUR DEGREE FOR THE REQUIRED 270 HOURS OF EMPLOYMENT-SPECIFIC PRACTICUM HOURS
Supervisory Requirements:
Two (2) years of documented clinical supervisory experience in the field of chemical dependency. These two (2) years may be included in the total five (5) years of required work experience. AND
Training: All specified training required at the level of CT, CDC I and CDC II plus a minimum of 30 contact training hours of Commission approved training in clinical supervision addressing the professional practice dimensions. These contact training hours must include clinical and managerial training that addresses family systems, culturally sensitive services and dual diagnosis. Clinical training includes: supervisor and employee relationships, discipline method, clinical evaluation performance and clinical policy development. Managerial training includes: implementation of federal and state regulations, administrative aspects of supervision and instructional and educational aspects of supervision. AND
Additional Requirements:
Alaska Chemical Dependency Counselor II certification (CDC II) and three (3) written professional references related to competencies. The references must be from professional affiliates who are familiar with the applicant’s work as a clinical supervisor, and at least one of whom has supervised the applicants work as a clinical supervisor. These references are in addition to those used for other levels of certification.

Information per the Arkansas Substance Abuse Certification Board (ASACB)

Certified Clinical Supervisor (CCS)
Definition
The IC&RC defines clinical supervision as a specific aspect of staff development dealing with developing clinical skills and competencies for persons providing counseling. A primary purpose of clinical supervision is to ensure skill development as evidenced in quality patient/client care.
Pre-requisite
Current certification as an IC&RC/AODA counselor or current certification as a Certified Criminal Justice Professional (CCJP) at the reciprocal level or hold a current valid specialty in another professional discipline in the human services field at the Masters level or higher.
Counselor Experience
Five (5) years (10,000 hours) of work experience as an IC&RC/AODA counselor is required. Higher education does not substitute for any portion of the work experience requirement.
Supervisory Experience
- Two (2) years (4000 hours) of clinical supervisory experience in the AODA field is required.
- The two (2) years may be included in the five (5) years of counseling experience and must include the provision of 200 contact hours of face-to-face clinical supervision.
- All experience must be documented as outlined in the ASACB Application and Standards manual.
Education
The education requirement for initial certification is thirty (30) hours of didactic training in clinical supervision.
- The training must include six (6) hours in each of the following areas: Assessment and Evaluation
- Counselor Development
- Management and Administration and Professional Responsibilities.
Written Examination
All member certification boards must use the IC&RC Clinical Supervisor written examination in their certification process.
Code of Ethics
The applicant must sign an ASACB code of ethics specific to Clinical Supervisors.
Re-certification
- Eighteen (18) hours of approved continuing education must be earned within the two-year certification cycle.
- Some hours may count for both counselor and supervisor re-certification.
- November 1 of even numbered years is the current re-certification postmark deadline for this credential.

Information from the California Board of Psychology and from the Board of Behavioral Sciences
in California notes the following with regards to the supervision of clinicians (various categories):
Requirements, Responsibilities and Qualifications for Psychology (with emphasis on California regulations)
Requirements:
- In order to become a Licensed Psychologist, applicants must accrue 3000 supervised clinical hours, 1500 of which must be accrued post-doctorally.
- Trainees must be under immediate supervision for the type, extent, and quality of clinical services provided during the course of their supervised experience.
- The limited services provided by the trainee must be in concert with the competencies and skills of the supervisor at all times. For example, if a trainee desires supervision of hypnosis, s/he must be supervised by a person certified in the delivery of hypnosis.
- Prior to the onset of the supervised experience, the supervisor and trainee must sign a supervision agreement or contract that contains the following elements:
- Capacity in which the trainee will be performing (intern, psychological assistant, etc.)
- Starting date of the supervised experience
- Anticipated completion date of the supervised experience
- Duties to be performed by the trainee
- Address of each location at which the specified duties will be performed
- Goals and objectives of the plan for supervised professional experience
- While not required by the BOP, it is also advisable to place in writing the ways by which the trainee will be evaluated throughout the supervised experience.
The primary supervisor maintains the agreement during the course of the supervised experience. Upon completion, the supervisor and trainee sign the document and attach it to the Verification of Experience and send both to the Board in partial fulfillment of the Licensure requirements.
- At any one time, Psychologists may supervise 3 Psychological Assistants, 2 MFT trainees or interns, and 2 Social Work Associates.
- At any one time, psychological corporations may have as many as 10 Psychological Assistants.
- In private practice, trainees are not permitted to treat clients in any week during which face-to-face supervision is not provided by the supervisor.
- It follows then, that trainees may not accrue or count hours in any week during which they do not receive supervision from their supervisor.
- Primary supervisors may take up to two weeks of vacation while supervising trainees. During that vacation period, trainees may treat their clients under the supervision of a qualified supervisor (a clinician who meets all of the requirements of a primary supervisor), who is on site. If the vacation period is longer than two weeks, the trainee must apply for a second primary supervisor who can provide supervision during the period which the primary supervisor is away (i.e. maternity leave).
Responsibilities:
Of Supervisor
- The supervisor must pay for the application and for any renewals for Registration for the prospective Psych Assistant.
- The supervisor must provide the trainee with the pamphlet, “Professional Therapy Never Includes Sex.”
- The supervisor must never engage in any exploitative or sexual relationship with the trainee.
- The supervisor must ensure that each prospective client of the Psych Assistant is informed in writing prior to the start of psychotherapy that his/her therapist is unlicensed, and is employed as a Psych Assistant by his/her supervisor (who is identified by name).
- The supervisor must monitor the progress and welfare of the trainee’s clients.
- The supervisor must have in place a plan for managing the client’s safety or welfare in the case of an emergency when the supervisor is not present.
- The supervisor is responsible for the collection of fees from the Psych Assistant’s clients. This does not mean that the supervisor must be present to collect each check in person. It simply means that all monies are turned in to the supervisor at the end of each business day, and all checks are made out in the name of the supervisor or the supervisor’s business.
- The supervisor must pay the trainee a salary (as a W-2 employee).
- The supervisor must be available to the trainee 100% of hours worked by the trainee, either in person or by electronic means.
- The supervisor must provide supervision at the rate of one hour per 10 hours worked by the trainee (in total, not solely client contact hours), with at least one hour provided in face-to-face supervision. If the trainee participates in group supervision, there is no limit to the number of trainees that comprise the group. Group supervision for post-doctoral trainees need not be longer than one hour in duration.
- The supervisor may not charge for supervision or office rent.
- The primary supervisor must monitor the supervision provided by any and all delegated supervisors.
- Delegated supervisors are no longer required to fulfill the on-going Continuing Education training for supervisors.
Of Trainee
- The trainee may have no proprietary interest in the business of the supervisor.
- The trainee may not rent, lease, sub-lease, or purchase office space.
- The trainee must maintain a supervision log that includes the following:
- The name, registration number and dated signature of the trainee.
- Location of the specific work setting.
- Specific dates for clinical hours as well as for supervision.
- The total number of hours worked, clinical hours worked, and hours and type of supervision received each week (e.g. individual, group).
- The specific tasks performed during the course of the supervisory experience that week (e.g. administration, psychotherapy group, research, individual therapy).
- All supervisors (primary and delegated) names, licensure types, and dated signatures for each supervision occurrence.
- Attestation statement signed by supervisor that the information identified is accurate (this can be a sentence provided just before the supervisor’s signature line).
- Attestation statement that states that “All hours accrued by this trainee during this supervision period were at least minimally effective.”
Supervisor Qualifications:

- A primary supervisor must be a Psychologist, or if a Psych Assistant should desire supervision from a Psychiatrist, the Psych Assistant may only accrue 750 supervised clinical hours from a Psychiatrist. Additional, delegated supervisors may be from other disciplines.
- During the course of the supervisory experience, the supervisor shall possess and maintain a valid, active license free of any formal disciplinary action, and will notify the trainee of any disciplinary action that affects his or her ability or qualifications to supervise. (Board of Psychology, 2004).
- A supervisor must be able to make objective evaluation of the trainee at all times. For this reason, it is inappropriate for the supervisor to have any additional relationship with the trainee (eg. friends should not supervise friends).
- A supervisor may not have any familial or interpersonal relationship with the trainee (especially former therapy between the two).
- The supervisor must receive six hours of formal training in supervision every two years. Any supervisor who is fulfilling that requirement for the first time must do so before the commencement of the supervised experience.
Requirements, Responsibilities and Qualifications for Marriage & Family Therapy (with emphasis on California regulations)
Requirements:
- The designation of the supervisee depends on the level of education and licensure status that the supervisee currently holds.
- The term “Trainee” refers to the supervisee who is currently enrolled in a Master’s or Doctoral program in Marriage & Family Therapy and is receiving supervision as a part of the requirements of that program. The trainee has completed no less than 12 semester or 18 quarter units of course work (Board of Behavioral Sciences, 2003).
- The term “Intern” refers to an unlicensed, but registered, individual who has completed a Master’s or Doctoral program in Marriage & Family Therapy and is receiving supervision as a part of the requirements for eventual licensure as a Marriage & Family Therapist.
- At any one time, MFTs can supervise 2 MFT interns or trainees, and 2 Social Work associates.
Responsibilities:
Of Supervisor
- The supervisor must provide the supervisee with the pamphlet, “Responsibility Statement for Supervisors of Marriage, Family and Child Counselor Trainee or Intern.” A sample of this statement is available on the website for the Board of Behavioral Sciences at https://www.bbs.ca.gov/pdf/forms/mft/mfrespon.pdf.
- The supervisor must monitor the supervisee sufficiently in order to insure the scope, type and quality of the clinical performance of the supervisee.
- The supervisor must review with the supervisee the manner in which all emergencies will be managed.
- The supervisor must obtain the name, address and phone number of the most recent prior supervisor and employer (if any exists).
- The supervisor is responsible for the collection of fees from the supervisee’s clients. The supervisee may not collect monies directly from his/her clients.
- The supervisee may act as a W-2 employee or as a volunteer, but cannot be considered a private contractor at any time.
- If the supervisee acts as a volunteer, s/he must have a written agreement with the agency for which s/he volunteers, specifying the extent and scope of his/her work, and which identifies the work as unpaid.
- If the supervisory experience occurs within the private practice setting, the supervisor must practice at the same sight as the supervisee.
- The supervisor must provide supervision at the rate of one hour per 5 hours worked if the supervisee is a trainee. If the supervisee is a registered intern, the supervisor must provide one hour of supervision for every 10 hours worked by the supervisee, in not less than 104 weeks. The intern must receive at least one hour of face-to-face supervision for 52 weeks.
- A two hour supervision group (with 8 or less supervisees) counts as one hour of direct supervision contact.
- All supervised hours must be accrued within a 6 year period.
- The supervisor may not charge for supervision.
- The supervisor must give at least one week’s notice of intent to cancel supervision agreement.
Of Supervisee
- The supervisee must apply to the Board to be an intern or trainee and must submit the “Responsibility Statement” for that supervision experience prior to the onset of employment.
- According to guidelines set in January, 2012 by the Board of Behavioral Psychology, unlicensed marriage and family therapist interns and trainees must provide each client or patient, prior to performing any professional services, with the following information (BPC §4980.44(c)): a. That he or she is an unlicensed marriage and family therapist registered intern (current law); b. His or her registration number (new provision); c. The name of his or her employer (new provision); and d. Indicate whether he or she is under the supervision of a licensed marriage and family therapist, licensed clinical social worker, licensed psychologist, or a licensed physician and surgeon certified in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (current law, but now the MFT intern must indicate the type of supervising licensee).
In addition, any advertisement by or on behalf of a marriage and family therapist intern or trainee must include, at a minimum, all of the following (BPC §4980.44(d)):
- That he or she is a marriage and family therapist registered intern or trainee;
- The registration number of the intern or trainee
- The name of his or her employer; and
- That he or she is supervised by a licensed person.
The use of the abbreviation “MFTI” in an advertisement is prohibited unless the title “marriage and family therapist registered intern” appears in the advertisement. (BPC §4980.44(d)(2)).
- The supervisee may have no proprietary interest in the business of the supervisor.
- The supervisee must maintain a supervision log of all hours worked. The log must be signed weekly by the supervisor. A sample of the weekly supervised experience log is presented at on the Board of Behavioral Sciences website at https://www.bbs.ca.gov/pdf/forms/lcs/aswlog.pdf.

- The supervisor may be a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist or other licensed professional approved by the Board. Other licensed professionals include Psychologists, Licensed Clinical Social Workers, and physicians certified in Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
- The supervisor must have practiced psychotherapy for at least two of the last five years.
- The supervisor may not be related by blood, marriage, intimate bond, or business to the supervisee as any and all of these relationships would impair the effectiveness of the supervision, as well as the perception of authority of the supervisor.
- The supervisor must receive six hours of formal training in supervision every two years.
Requirements, Responsibilities and Qualifications for Social Work (with emphasis on California regulations)
Requirements:
The supervisor may provide supervision to the associate clinical social worker who is registered by the Board of Behavioral Sciences for the express purpose of accruing clinical hours to fulfill the requirement for licensure. At any one time, LCSWs may supervise 2 MFT interns or trainees, and 2 Social Work Associates.
Responsibilities:
Of Supervisor
- The supervisor must complete the “Responsibility Statement for Supervisors of an Associate Clinical Social Worker.” The Supervisor must send the original to the Board and must provide a copy to the supervisee. A sample of the “Responsibility Statement” is provided by the Board of Behavioral Sciences on their website at https://www.bbs.ca.gov/pdf/forms/lcs/lcrespon.pdf
- The supervisor and supervisee must develop a supervisory plan that identifies goals and objectives for the supervision experience. That plan must be submitted to the Board of Behavioral Sciences within 30 days of the onset of the supervisory experience.
- The supervisee may act as a W-2 employee or as a volunteer.
- If the supervisory experience occurs within the private practice setting, the supervisor must practice at the same site as the supervisee.
- If the supervision is not conducted in a private practice, and the supervisor is not employed by the same agency as the supervisee, the supervisor must have a written agreement with the supervisee’s employer.
- The supervisor must provide face-to-face supervision at the rate of one hour per every 10 client contact hours, for not less than 104 weeks. At least 50% of that face-to-face supervision must be provided as individual supervision.
- A two hour supervision group (with 8 or less supervisees) counts as one hour of direct supervision contact.
- The supervisor is responsible for monitoring the supervisee sufficiently so that s/he can insure the scope, type, and quality of the clinical services performed by the supervisee.
- The supervisor must regularly review the supervisee’s records to evaluate his/her clinical assessments and treatments.
- The supervisor must maintain regular assessment of the supervisee’s clinical skills and deficits.
- The supervisor is responsible for the collection of fees from the supervisee’s clients. The supervisee may not collect monies directly from his/her clients.
- The supervisor may not charge for supervision.
- The supervisor must give the supervisee at least one week’s written notice of the intent not to continue the supervision experience.
- The supervisor must complete the “Termination of Supervision” form at the completion of the supervised experience and submit the original signed form to the Board within 30 days of termination of supervision.
- The supervisor must complete a yearly assessment of the associate, and/or an evaluation of the associate at the completion or termination of the supervised experience.
Of Supervisee
- The supervisee must apply to the Board and must pay the application and any annual renewal fee.
- The supervisee must inform each prospective client prior to the start of psychotherapy that she/he is unlicensed, and is being supervised.
- The supervisee may have no proprietary interest in the business of the supervisor.
Qualifications:

- In order to supervise an Associate Clinical Social Worker, a prospective supervisor must have been licensed for at least 2 years as a Social Worker or other licensed mental health professional approved by the Board.
- The supervisor must have practiced psychotherapy for at least two of the last five years.
- In order to maintain appropriate authority, the relationship between supervisor and supervisee must be free of any distractions. As such, a supervisor must not be related by blood, marriage, or intimate bond to the supervisee.
- The supervisor must receive fifteen hours of formal training in supervision, completed before the onset of the supervised experience.
SB 822 SUPERVISOR IMMUNITY
On January 1, 2008, SB 822, officially became operative law. It will grant immunity to supervisors of graduate students who communicate relevant information to the graduate program about a student’s performance. This is the same immunity granted to individuals who communicate similarly with professional associations, the California Board of Psychology, and individuals in medical, dental, podiatric, and veterinary schools. This law will ensure that supervisors working in public service programs, as well as independent practitioners who supervise students in training, can provide honest, straightforward evaluative information about the student being supervised. Certified Clinical Supervisor
Pre-requisite
The prerequisite for certification as a Clinical Supervisor is certification as an AODA (LAC/CAC/RAC) or AAODA (AADC) counselor as the IC&RC reciprocal level or an individual holding a specialty substance abuse credential in another professional discipline in the human services field at the Master’s level or higher.
Education
The applicant must provide documentation by certificate of thirty (30) hours of formal didactic education training in clinical supervision approved by the CEB of LASACT. The formal education training must include six (6) education hours within each of the following clinical supervision performance domains: Assessment and Evaluation, Counselor Development, Management and Administration, and Professional Responsibilities. All education hours must be documented by certificate or acceptable letter.
Experience
The work experience requirement for the credential is as follows:
- current certification as an LAC, CAC, or RAC or AADC at the reciprocal level OR
- hold a current valid specialty substance abuse license/certification in another professional discipline in the human services field at the Master’s level or higher.
- Verification and documentation of five years (10,000 hours) of professional experience in the AODA field.
Supervised Practicum
Definitions: Practicum: a formal systematic process that focuses on skill development and integration of knowledge. Direct Supervision: one-on-one supervision, group supervision, or direct observation of skills within the Core Functions.
The Supervised Practicum includes verification and documentation of two years (4,000 hours) of clinical supervisory experience in the AODA field. The two years may be included in the five years (10,000 hours) of counseling experience and must include the provision of 200 contact hours of face-to-face clinical supervision.
Code of Ethics
Applicants must sign a statement that they understand and agree to comply with the LASACT/CEB Code of Ethics/Code of Ethics for Clinical Supervisor.
Written Examination
Each applicant must pass the international written examination as determined by IC&RC/AODA standards.

Certified Clinical Supervisor (CCS)
This credential is for the alcohol and other drug abuse clinical supervisor. This is an international credential that is recognized throughout the world via reciprocity.
The State of Maryland recognizes the CCS as a qualified statement of your ability to supervise lower level counselors at the workplace. Application for, and renewal of, the CCS occurs within the same parameters of the CCDC. Please contact MAPCB for more information about this credential.
CCS REQUIREMENTS ARE AS FOLLOWS:
- Five years (10,000 hours) of paid, supervised employment as an alcohol and other drug abuse counselor.
- Two years (4,000 hours) of paid, supervised employment as an alcohol and other drug abuse clinical supervisor. These 2 years may be included in the 5 years of counseling employment and must include the provision of 200 contact hours of face-to-face clinical supervision.
- Current and valid CCDC credential OR a master’s degree in a human service related field.
- 30 hours of MAPCB approved didactic education in the following clinical supervision domains: assessment/ evaluation, counselor development, management/ administration, and professional responsibility.
- Sign and abide by Code of Ethical Conduct.
- Must live or work in MD at time of application.
- Pass a written exam.
- Submission of application, all documentation, and fee.
- CCS is valid only through date of renewal and must be recertified.

Overview of Requirements
Applicants must currently hold the Certified Addictions Counselor (CAC-M, CAC-R) credential, Certified Advanced Addiction Counselor (CAAC) or hold a specialty substance abuse credential in another professional discipline in the human services field at the master’s level or higher to be eligible to apply for the Certified Clinical Supervisor (CCS-M).
Clinical Supervision is defined as a formal systematic process of staff development focusing on clinical skills and competencies for persons providing counseling.
Experience
No Degree
- 10 years (20,000 hours) clinical supervisory experience in the AODA field (including a minimum of 200 hours providing direct clinical supervision)
- Five years (10,000 hours) counseling experience as an AODA Counselor; these five (5) years of counseling experience may be included in the ten (10) years of clinical supervisory experience
Bachelors Degree*
- *Degree must be in behavioral science/human services from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
- Five years (10,000 hours) clinical supervisory experience in the AODA field (including a minimum of 200 hours of direct clinical supervision)
- Two years (4,000 hours) counseling experience as an AODA Counselor; these two (2) years may be included in the five (5) years of clinical supervisory experience

Masters Degree*
- *Degree must be in behavioral science/human services with a clinical application from a regionally accredited institution of higher education.
- Three years (6,000 hours) clinical supervisory experience in the AODA field.
- One year (2,000 hours) counseling experience in the AODA field (including a minimum of 200 hours providing direct clinical supervision); this one (1) year counseling experience may be included in the three (3) years of supervision experience.
Experience is defined as full or part-time experience counseling AODA clients and supervising AODA counselors at a MDCIS/ODCP licensed program. The experience may be as a paid or volunteer employee and must be in the IC&RC/AODA Performance Domains and the Twelve Core Counseling Functions.
Education
30 contact hours in clinical supervision (with a minimum of 6 hours specific to Ethics and a minimum of 6 hours in each of the following Performance Domains)

Education is defined as formal classroom education (workshops, seminars, institutes, in-services, and college/university work) or “Home Study” (internet, correspondence, teleconferences). One contact hour of education is equal to (50) minutes of continuous instruction.
Education must be specific or related to the knowledge and skills necessary to perform the tasks within each IC&RC/AODA Performance Domain. A maximum of 30 contact hours may be from “Home Study”.
All education must be documented and from a MCBAP approved source.
College and University Courses must be from a regionally accredited institution of higher education and accepted by the institution toward a recognized degree (e.g., A.A., B.A., M.A., M.S., etc.).

Fee – Submit completed application with a $150.00 two-year initial application fee
Renewal
Applicants currently holding a CAC-M, CAC-R, CAAC-M or a specialty in substance abuse credential from another professional discipline at a Master’s level or higher and in good standing.

Certified Clinical Supervisor (CCS)
In order to become certified with this credential, the applicant must meet the following requirements:
- Certification as a Substance Abuse Counselor or Certified Clinical Addictions Specialist (applicant must maintain counselor certification in order to maintain supervisor credential).
- 8,000 hours (four years) and a masters degree in a human services field with a clinical application from a regionally accredited college or university (10,000 hours in order to be reciprocal through the IC&RC/AODA, Inc.).
- 4,000 hours (two years) experience as a substance abuse clinical supervisor.
- Thirty hours of substance abuse clinical supervision specific education/training for initial certification. These hours should be reflective of the twelve core functions in their clinical application and practice.
- One letter of reference from the applicants current supervisor.
- Three letters of reference: one from a professional who can attest to supervisory competence and two from either counselors who have been supervised by the candidate or professionals who can attest to the applicants competence.
- Successful completion of IC&RC/AODA, Inc. written examination.
- Payment of all fees. $25.00 should be submitted to the Board with a letter of intent in order to receive the application packet. $250.00 should be submitted to the Board when application packet is completed and mailed ($125.00 registration fee and $125.00 written test fee).
NEW CLINICAL SUPERVISION REQUIREMENTS
After January 1, 2003 all applicants for both the CSAC and the CCAS (except through a Deemed Status organization) must be supervised by a CCS or a Clinical Supervisor Intern. A Clinical Supervisor Intern (after January 1, 2003) is a CSAC or CCAS who has submitted:
- An application
- Resume
- Transcript of a completed masters degree in a human services field with a clinical application from a regionally accredited college or university
- Signed Verification Statements
- Documentation of at least fifty percent (50%) of clinical supervision specific training as defined by the Board
- Payments of fees
Upon completion of this process, an applicant for Certified Clinical Supervisor will be designated a Clinical Supervisor Intern by the Board.
Applicant then has three (3) years to complete the application process which will include:
- Documentation of practice as a clinical supervisor as defined above
- Letter of reference from current supervisor
- Three (3) letters of reference from colleagues/co-workers, one of which must be from a person who was supervised by this applicant
- Documentation of remainder of clinical supervision specific education/training hours
- Successful completion of IC&RC/AODA, Inc. written examination
- Payment of fees

Licensed Chemical Dependency Clinical Supervisor Requirements (LCDCS)
Experience
- Verification of two years (4,000 hours) of clinical supervisory experience in the AODA field, in an approved licensed program beyond the three years (6,000 hours) submitted for Advanced Chemical Dependency Professional certification.
- These two (2) years must include the provision of 200 contact hours of face-to-face clinical supervision, which were under the direct supervision of an individual with an Advanced degree in Human Services, (Masters or Doctoral level) or LCDCS, of which 60 hours must be face-to-face Clinical Supervision.
- Fifty percent (50%) of the experience must be gained within five (5) years prior to Application
- A formal job description on facility letterhead must be submitted from facilities verifying experience. Please note that an acceptable job description must state that you provided Clinical Supervision along with performing all the Domains and Tasks of a Clinical Supervisor
- Recommendation of Program Director.
- References as follows:
- At least one current or previous supervisor
- At least two supervisees
- At least 30 hours of Clinical Supervision Workshop, or a completed 3 credit course approved by the Board. This must include training in each of the following areas: Assessment/Evaluation, Counselor Development, Management/Administration, and Professional Responsibilities.
- Successful completion of 6 Hrs. Chemical Dependency Counselor Ethics Training.
- Applicants must submit Evaluation forms (pages 16 – 18) and a written narrative completed by their Clinical Supervisor of each facility verifying experience.

- Successful passing of written examination that has been approved by the ICRC.
Recognized Clinical Supervisor (RCS)
This acknowledgement was developed by the R.I.B.C.C.D.P. for clinical supervisors, not holding the ICRC recognized CDCS certification, who want recognition by the RIBCCDP to provide clinical supervision to applicants pursuing certification. Please note: This is RIBCCDP recognition, not an International certification with reciprocity.
Requirements
- Masters degree in Behavioral Sciences with two (2) years clinical experience and documentation of 120 clock hours Substance Abuse Specific training. Included in this 120 clock hours must be 30 hours chemical dependency clinical supervisor education which includes training in the following Domains:
