DESCRIPTION: Introduction to Attachment-Based Supervision: Clinical supervision is both an educational and relational process shaped by trust, vulnerability, power, and attachment. This continuing education webinar introduces Attachment-Based Supervision and examines how attachment dynamics influence supervisees’ responses to feedback, evaluation, uncertainty, clinical risk, and professional development. Participants will explore the supervisor’s role as a secure base, including how to provide emotional safety, reflective support, appropriate challenge, accountability, and professional boundaries without becoming overprotective. The webinar will also examine how secure, anxious, avoidant, and disorganized attachment patterns may present within supervision.
Attention will be given to supervisors’ attachment styles, countertransference responses, and the ways their own relational patterns may affect communication, conflict, emotional availability, and supervisory decision-making. Participants will learn to understand feedback as an attachment event that may activate fears of failure, rejection, criticism, or loss of professional belonging. The presentation will offer attachment-informed principles for delivering clear and developmentally appropriate feedback, identifying supervisory ruptures, and facilitating repair. Participants will leave with practical strategies for creating supervision that is psychologically safe, appropriately challenging, ethically grounded, and supportive of lasting professional growth.

Dr. Alex Rowell is a practicing clinical psychologist in the states of California, Oregon, Illinois, and the United Kingdom. He has a wide range of clinical experiences that include working in various inpatient/outpatient hospitals, non-profit organizations, multiple college-counseling centers, NHS, in the UK and currently works virtually in private practice. His areas of interests include clinical supervision/supervising, mood disorders, self-compassion, teaching, mindfulness, burnout, and gender awareness and education.
Dr Rowell has presented on peripartum mental health, multicultural awareness, clinical supervision, and personality disorders at various national and international conferences. He practices mainly from a Humanistic, Psychodynamic, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy orientation, and is RAPPS (Register of Applied Psychology Practice Supervisors) certified through the BPS (British Psychological Association).
