Going through an excruciatingly painful breakup is a common yet heart-wrenching experience that often leads people to seek mental health treatment. The end of some romantic relationships can be so difficult that clients become hyper-focused on their ex as if they were an addictive stimulus. For example, clients struggling through love-addicted breakups often report obsessively thinking about their ex, craving contact with them, feeling emotionally labile and distressed, and acting in harmful compulsive and impulsive ways. These symptoms can adversely impact day to day functioning, disrupting their overall quality of life.
When working with clients who can’t seem to get over their ex, conceptualizing and treating their symptoms through an addictive framework can not only be helpful in understanding your clients experience but can lead to better outcomes. This beginner-level Lunch and Learn webinar is a brief introduction to the latest research on romantic love and breakups as an addictive process. Specifically, you’ll learn to describe how and why falling in love can be addictive, and identify the primary symptoms of a love-addicted breakup. You’ll also learn a few basic strategies to use with clients to stop unwanted symptoms. For those who enjoy this webinar and are interested in a deeper dive into this topic, a longer course will be available later in the year.

Dr. Cortney S. Warren is a board certified clinical psychologist and former tenured associate professor of psychology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). Having won numerous professional awards for her research, Cortney is an expert on addictions, self-deception, romantic relationships, eating pathology, and the practice of psychotherapy from a cross-cultural perspective. Her newest work is a self-help book on love addiction and breakups called Letting Go of Your Ex, scheduled to be published in early 2023.

This webinar will be hosted through Zoom. Upon registration, participants will be emailed a link directly from Zoom. Course completion requirements: After the webinar if you attended the entire webinar you will have access to the course in your My Courses. If you did not attend the entire webinar you will have access to the course within 3-5 days when the video is uploaded to the course. You will be notified by email when the recording is ready.
In order to receive Live CE credit hours, you must attend the entire webinar and then complete the post webinar test and evaluation within 30 days of the end of the webinar.
If you pay and either miss part of the webinar or are unable to attend: Don’t worry. You can still obtain CE credits (though not Live) by viewing the recording and taking the post-test and evaluation. You will receive an email notification when the recording is ready for viewing, no later than 5 days after the webinar is over. You have 3 years to complete a home-study course.
