Fulfills requirement: Diversity
Every client brings a unique combination of culture, identity, history, and lived experience to the therapeutic relationship. This five-section certificate program helps mental health professionals develop the knowledge and practical skills to recognize these influences, reduce the impact of implicit bias, and provide more culturally responsive counseling and psychotherapy with diverse populations.
Program Highlights:
Strengthen your clinical foundation – Develop a deeper understanding of cultural humility, implicit bias, and the historical and sociocultural factors that influence mental health and treatment.
Recognize the barriers – Explore how stigma, discrimination, cultural beliefs, and systemic factors can affect help-seeking, treatment engagement, and access to mental health care.
Individualize your approach – Learn to consider language, immigration and citizenship status, acculturation, socioeconomic status, religion, gender, sexuality, disability, age, and other aspects of identity when working with diverse clients.
Improve therapeutic relationships – Recognize and mitigate implicit bias, build rapport, communicate effectively, and foster more inclusive therapeutic relationships.
Broaden your clinical perspective – Examine culturally responsive considerations for working with Latin American, Black, Asian American, Native American, Arab American, Jewish American, and multiracial and multiethnic clients; older adults; clients with disabilities; and members of the LGBTQ+ community.
Content includes original material drawn from the latest research, along with interviews and presentations from mental health professionals with extensive experience working with diverse clinical populations. Materials are presented in written, audio, and video formats.
